HFESS 30th Anniversary Symposium

To celebrate our 30th Anniversary, the HF & Ergonomics Society of Singapore (HFESS) will be hosting the Human Factors Symposium at Singapore University of Social Sciences (formerly known as SIM University). As a federated member of the International Ergonomics Association (IEA), IEA speakers have been invited to speak on a wide range of topics. Dr Yushi Fujita, President of IEA, will be presenting at the symposium. The symposium is a platform for local, regional and international HFE practitioners to discuss HFE challenges in technological landscape and the potential research directions to focus on.

International Network of Safety and Health Practitioner Organisations (INSHPO) Meetings in Singapore

The International Network of Safety and Health Practitioner Organisations (INSHPO) is the global voice for the occupational safety and health (OSH) profession and acts as a forum for international collaboration among professional organisations to improve safety and health at work.

INSHPO was created out of an appreciation that OSH issues and concerns are not limited by national borders. With the increasing worldwide distribution of products and provision of services, the widespread migration of workers, and conduct of international corporate activities, almost every issue that OSH professionals face is global in scope.

Inaugural Asia-Pacific OHS Training Convention

SafeYouth@Work Congress

The International Labour Organization (ILO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) of Singapore, is organising a SafeYouth@Work Congress as part of the XXI World Congress on Safety and Health at Work 2017, 3 to 6 September at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre. The SafeYouth@Work Congress seeks to highlight the critical need for awareness of safety and health issues for youth in the workplace. Some 200 Youth Champions from around the world, aged 18-24, will participate in the SafeYouth@Work Congress, engage World Congress participants, and to become agents of change for SafeYouth@Work in their home countries.

Singapore Accord on the Standards of OHS Professionals (SISO)

The Singapore Accord brings together leading OHS professional organisations, OHS certification bodies and OHS organisations to aspire towards the standards of the INSHPO OHS Professional Capability Framework (“Framework”). The Framework was jointly developed by more than a dozen organisations from more than 10 countries, with a close involvement from SISO.

This Global Framework for Practice defines the role of the OHS professional as well as the requisite knowledge and skills. It promotes a high standard of capability among OHS professionals and, in turn, informs employers and regulators as to the capabilities of OHS professionals. INSHPO hopes that such clarity will raise the standard of OHS Professionals in this increasing global stage.

Industrial Hygiene professionals networking session

In collaboration with the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) Singapore, the Occupational and Environmental Health Society (OEHS) and Registered Industrial Hygienist (RIH) Board are organising a networking session for all industrial hygienists. At the session, speakers will share the development of industrial hygiene in Singapore for the past 40 years and plans slated to improve industrial hygiene. One highlight of the event will be RIH(SG) certificate presentation to RIHs in recognition of the profession and their roles in workplace safety and health in Singapore. MOM Divisional Director for Occupational Safety & Health, Er. Ho Siong Hin, has kindly agreed to grace the session.

IALI Executive Committee (EC) Meeting

The International Association of Labour Inspection (IALI) is the global professional association for labour inspection. It was established in 1972, and currently has over 100 members worldwide. IALI has always worked in close partnership with the International Labour Office (ILO) and other host country organizations, and is increasingly working at regional levels.

Once every 3 years, IALI holds a Congress and General Assembly, at which its past and future plans are openly discussed with all members and decisions are taken about the future direction of the Association. A new Executive Committee will also be elected during the next General Assembly. The General Assembly will be on 6 Septmeber 2017 in Singapore.

Using Wikipedia for Dissemination, Engagement and Impact: A hands-on workshop for health and safety professionals

Wikipedia, a collaboratively written web-based database, has become the dominant online reference for patients, health providers and the public (Heilman, 2009). Wikipedia ranks as the seventh most accessed website on the internet. As such, developing and implementing a carefully crafted online strategy using Wikipedia will help to drive searchers to organizational websites and to the other relevant information. This workshop will share how health and safety professionals can make use of Wikipedia to further their cause.

Information session on progress made under the WHO Global Plan of Action on Workers’ Health (2008-2017)

In 2007, the 60th World Health Assembly endorsed a Global Plan of Action on Workers’ Health for 2008 – 2017 and urged WHO member states to devise national policies and plans for its implementation. The objectives of the session is to understand and provide feedback on the progress made at global and regional level in the implementation of the 10-year global plan of action on workers’ health.
